I used to wonder why Hollywood is the most powerful and popular film industry in a country that produces thousands of films annually. I remember visiting Nigeria in 2005 at the young age of 15. While touring the cities of Lagos and Abuja, I noticed that all the cinemas were showing Hollywood films. Why were the new Nollywood releases not being shown in the cinema? I researched more into this question and found my answer. It’s a simple fact of supply and demand. Nigerians prefer watching Hollywood films over Nollywood films so in order to make profits; cinemas all over the nation put more emphasis on showing the latest Hollywood blockbusters. There are various reasons why Nigerians prefer watching Hollywood films over their own.
