Before Ola Balogun and other Nollywood pioneers started creating films, what was it like in Nigeria? I spoke to many elder Nigerians that lived in the country during the 1960s to get an idea of how it was back then. The general consensus was that during those days, Nigerians looked to Hollywood for their form of entertainment. Emeka Ogunbiyi, the grandfather of a Nigerian friend of mine, hails from Lagos, Nigeria. He is the father of four children and grandfather to nine. He tells me what he remembers. “American films such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Manchurian Candidate, Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, and West Side Story were films I remember being popular in Nigeria. We flocked to the cinema to watch these foreign American masterpieces. We looked to Hollywood for our entertainment. Even after Nigerian films were being made, Hollywood films were still the most popular” (Ogunbiyi, 2012).
